Hunger (Short Story) – Ch 1

Hunger – is the most commonly used term to describe the social condition of people (or organisms) that frequently experience, or live with the threat of experiencing, the physical sensation of hunger.

‘Beep-Beep-Beep-Beep-Beep’
Alan opened one eye groggily, looked at the time at the digital clock next to his bed, it read 5:45.
Somehow the digits seemed to dance in Alan’s one barely opened eye.
He gingerly grabbed the square irritating device, fumbled for a few seconds with it and hit the “snooze” button.
Exactly 15 minutes later it sounded ‘Beep-Beep-Beep-Beep-Beep’ again. This time Alan gave up and kicked the quilt. He stood up, looked around the room, it was neat and tidy, just the way he liked it, just the way he remembered and kept it always.
He went straight to the bathroom. In the shower Alan pondered on the day that lay ahead.
He had quite a few meetings lined up and later on in the evening he had to take Stacy out for dinner.
Alan White was a meticulous man.
He had made it to the top of his profession. Had a beautiful girlfriend, a good bank balance and was quite popular amongst friends and colleagues alike.
Yet there was something amiss in his life, he like all successful people wanted more and it was this hunger of more that kept him pushing on.
‘Beep-beep-beep’ this time it was his cell phone ringing.
He walked out of the shower, dried his hands and answered the phone.
The conversation lasted 2 minutes and all Alan kept saying was a monotonous ‘yes’.
Alan hung up. Got dressed and left.
