SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA — Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) on Friday announced that its Board of Directors supported entering into a Registry Agreement with ICM Registry, approving .xxx as a new top-level domain for the internet.
The .xxx domain would be established especially for pornographic websites, and Board members supporting the move said that it would protect users and visitors from viruses, identity theft, credit card fraud and exposure to child abuse images.
In addition, it would be helping parents and those wishing to block out pornography from there internet connections by making it easier to identify and filter adult entertainment sites.
However, those against the domain argue that the establishment of .xxx approves and legitimizes the pornographic industry. Adult entertainment industry leaders also opposed the .xxx domain, saying it could lead to its eventual censorship.
