KABUL — Afghan security forces on Saturday morning killed two insurgents, including a suspected would-be suicide bomber, after they launched an attack on a NATO military base in eastern Kabul, officials said.
The attack happened at approximately 6.30 a.m. local time when Camp Phoenix came under a small arms and rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) attack, a spokesperson for the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said.
“Early reports indicate that there were 2 attackers, one of which was a potential suicide bomber,” the ISAF spokesperson said. “Friendly forces returned fire [and] both insurgents were killed.”
The alliance said Afghan National Security Forces responded to the incident and that the situation was under control as of 8 a.m. local time. Three Afghan soldiers sustained injuries in the attack, none of which are believed to be serious.
