Mohali Senior Superintendent of Police, Gurpreet Singh Bhullar, said that anti-sabotage teams, mounted police, 150 CCTV cameras, bomb disposal and sniffer dog squads would also be in place for Wednesday’s match.

Nearly 1,200 police officers were deployed around Hotel Taj, which is about 12 km from the stadium, where the two teams are staying.

Over 16,000 match tickets were sold in less than two days in the 28,000-capacity stadium while the rest were to be distributed to officials and guests.

Cricketing ties between the two countries were suspended in the wake of Mumbai terror attacks in 2008. Pakistan’s official announced on Sunday that Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani will visit India at the invitation of his Indian counterpart Dr. Manmohan Singh to watch the cricket match.

The invitation for the match came just ahead of the Interior Secretary-level talks between both countries, scheduled for Monday and Tuesday. According to officials, the talks, the first since the attacks, will discuss terrorism, humanitarian issues, removal of visa restrictions and cooperation to fight drug trafficking.

The November 26 attack in Mumbai was executed by ten Lashkar-e-Taiba operatives which arrived by sea. The group divided in two and carried out an unprecedented attack for 60 hours at the Hotels Taj Mahal and Oberoi-Trident and Jewish outreach centre Nariman House in South Mumbai.

Overall, the terrorists killed 166 people and injured 238 others. Nine of them were killed by Indian security forces after the siege. The attacks caused damages worth around $34 million.

Cricket World Cup opens with a spectacular show of colour and dance

Cricket

From Our Bloggers

News

Sports

cricket world cup

pakistan cricket

world cup 2011

world cup opening ceremony
<guid

The energy in the 25,000 strong crowd inside the stadium was spectacular that was matched by the much greater number outside the stadium which danced and celebrated to show the world how much the world cup means to the cricket loving nation of Bangladesh. Bangladeshi people have truly given a soul to the event which was much needed after the lackluster dragged out event in the Caribbean four years ago. If there were any doubts about the popularity of the top cricketing event there wouldn’t be any more . Cricket has got its flair back and world cup has returned to its most loyal supporters.

The ceremony had the dance and music without which cricket is never complete in South Asia and it synced perfectly with the festive mood that was all where to be seen. The ceremony involved a dazzling laser show in which projections were made on a long white curtain depicting the battle between bat and ball. Politicians with their boring speeches also ate up their share of the time without which no ceremony is really complete. In the most Bangladeshi manner captains of all the teams were brought to centre of the arena riding cycle rickshaws amid defeaning cheers from the crowds with the loudest cheer reserved for the Bangladeshi captain Shakeeb-ul-Hassan.

Bangladeshis have set just about the perfect tone for the cricket cup world which comes to the part of the world which has truly made it it’s own.

Misbah guides Pakistan to a draw and rare overseas series victory

Cricket

Featured

From Our Bloggers

News

Sports

pakistan vs newzealand

paksitan series win
<guid

At one stage Pakistan team was struggling at 42 for the loss of 3 wickets before the experienced pair of Younis and Misbah steered the team to safety. New Zealand bowling attack made early inroads into the Pakistani batting lineup when accurate lengths of Martin and Southee claimed 3 of Pakistan to order batsmen. Century stand between Younis and Misbah at one point threatened to win the game for Pakistan but Younis wicket just at the stroke of tea forced Misbah into his shell. Misbah and Asad played with maximum caution after the tea playing defensively against Vitorri. Perhaps the fear of losing overcame the desire for victory as both the batsmen failed to take the attack to the Kiwis in the final hour of play. With 10 over remaining Pakistan needed another 60 and they still had 6 of their wickets in hand, a team more accustomed to wining probably would have made that dash to the victory stand but Misbah was determined not to take any chances. Pakistan secured the draw and won their first overseas series after seven years. With the series win Misbah has further improved his chances of captaining Pakistan in the world cup while Afridi will be determined to outshine Misbah in the one dayers that are to follow. Pakistan team did well against the Kiwis in the test series and showed that even without their ace bowlers they still have enough fire power to take 20 wickets.

ICC anti-corruption tribunal begins in Doha

Cricket

Featured

News

Sports

asif amir butt

cricket scandal

icc anti-corruption scandal
<guid

It is the most high profile hearing involving corruption in cricket after King’s inquiry into match fixing allegations against former South African captain Hansie Crojne. The three Pakistani players are already in Doha along with their lawyers. The tribunal hearing will focus on the video evidence that has been provided by the British tabloid in which the alledged bookie Mazhar Majeed is shown telling the exact timings when the infamous no balls will be bowled in the match. Also in the spot light is some 42,000 pounds recovered from Salman Butt’s room durring Scotland Yard’s raid on the player’s hotel. Pakistan coach Waqar Younis is also going to stand witness in the proceedings while captain Shahid Afridi will join through video conference. According to media reports players involved will get penalised with captain Salman Butt in line for the heaviest punishment.

Malik not in the worldcup plans, Akmal and Yousuf cling on

Cricket

Featured

News

Sports
<guid

The traumatic journey that started with the monstrous keeping of Kamran Akmal and devilish umpiring of Daryl Hair in 2005 only seems to get more horrifying every year and that has been the story this year around as well. There were a few moments of pure brilliance that have come with countless shameful (shameless) and shocking debacles.

The Sydney Nightmare

The year started with the Syndey test which could have provided a dream start to the year, but as it turned out it was the mother of all nightmares. Micheal Hussey without any doubt has proved to be one of the biggest nemesis of Pakistan only to come behind the Mr.Kamran Akmal. In a unparalleled feat of brilliance Akmal managed to deny Pakistan a rare victory in Australia when he dropped dollies and played marbles while the batsmen were attempting to get themselves run out. Pakistan would have to wait many more years before they can register a win down under. The embarrassing white wash in Australia was followed by an expected backlash back home. The Pakistan Cricket Board suspended nine players that toured Australia which included all the big guns (Yousuf, Younus, Malik included) only to take back their decision in an expected U turn few months later.

Michael Hussey Returns

The next big assignment for the team was to defend their T20 title in Caribbean. All seemed well until Michael Hussey came to bat in the semi final. Chasing a total close to 200 and the run rate approaching 12 an over, it looked like a task which was too much to ask even for Mr. Cricket. But Pakistani fans were left stunned and dumb founded as he slapped Ajmal ball after ball for maximums. Hussey succeeded in deepening the mental scars on the Pakistanis that he had left in Sydey earlier in the year.

Finally we beat Australia

Pakistan played their home series against Australia due to security conditions back home. The two match series started with an expected rout in the first test match. The bowling of Asif and Amir was just magical to see if only the batsmen could play better than the bowlers it seemed victory was within reach. That happened in the seconds test match when a scintillating display of fast swing bowling by Pakistan’s teen sensation left Australia wrecked for a under 100 total in the first innings in Lords. In the last innings Pakistan was left chasing a total that was similar to one that they were chasing in Sydney earlier in the year. Pakistan beat England in Oval to bury the demons of 2005. Fourth test match of the series was played in England which was overshadowed by a news story which accused players from Pakistani team of involvement in match fixing. The allegations came with video evidences showing Pakistani bowlers Amir and Asif bowling no balls on directions of the bookies. Police raided Pakistani team hotel and thousands of pounds of currency was recovered from Pakistan team captain’s room. The players accused of match fixing were forcibly taken out of the team by the ICC and Pakistan team still had to be in England playing one day internationals. Similar allegations were leveled against Pakistan team even during the one day internationals which over shadowed the highest quality of cricket on display.

South Africa in UAE

Towards the end of the year Pakistan team was back in the familiar territory playing cricket against South Africa in UAE. Pakistan lost both the T20 and one day series but managed to square the test series salvaging some of their long lost pride.
