The lectureshop addressed many issues related to marital and single lives of Muslims. They included the issues which are often regarded as taboo in a society like Pakistan.

The event also clarified many misconceptions about treating women in Islam and openly rejected beating women citing the sunnah of Prophet Muhammad PBUH that he never raised his hand on any of his wives. Many other similar examples were also discussed including the possibility of having an argument between spouses.

Protesters chanted slogans against US policies and intervention in internal matters of Pakistan. They also demanded the free and fair trial of Raymond Davis in Pakistani courts, release of Dr. Afia Siddiqui, closure of US embassies and bases in Pakistan.

Speakers including General (retired) Hamid Gul, Dr. Fouzia Siddiqui spoke against the current political system and politicians. Speakers from Youths also chanted Islamic slogans demanding “Islamic” system and condemned the democracy calling it the “system of dis-believers”! However in a leaflet distributed by a youth organization Pakistan Youth Alliance, clearly stated that they won’t let the democracy derail and they also stated to the military establishment not to play “politics” in the name of Raymond Davis.

The focus of the event is to highlight the role of youth in peace building and to bridge cultural, regional and religious gaps. Participants will also discuss ways to work for women empowerment, disaster management and use of modern social networking tools to help in these areas. The conference will also give opportunity to foreign delegates to come and see the side of Pakistan that is rarely highlighted in the foreign media. Big names from tech giants such as Google, Facebook are also expected to be there. The organizers of the event are hopeful that the conference would be prove to be an extremely useful event to bridge cultural gaps between Pakistan’s youth and the rest of the world.

Iqbal’s philosophy is as much relevant to today’s Pakistani society as it was to inhabitants of undivided India. He was against religious orthodoxy for which he was labeled as a deviant by the clergy but he remained undettered. He often through his writings pointed out the disease which plagued Muslim society back then. His shikwa and jawabe shikwa is a dialogue between God and a Muslim and highlights how Muslims of his time resorted to living in their fascinations of the past. He was a revolutionary of his age and and it’s a pity that we have all just that we have taken nothing from the vision of Iqbal.

Well, it is said that the Fridays Eid is unlucky for the rulers. Many scholars rejected this idea and declared the Fridays Eids to be the pious ones. However we know that in the history of Pakistani governments, particularly in Ayub Khan’s regime, rulers have been actually postponing the Eid with the intention that it should not fall on Fridays because of a superstitious belief that the Eids on Fridays are unlucky for rulers.

And ofcourse I am not suggesting the confirmation of moon sighting spot fixing. Obviously chances are there that the moon is actually not sighted. I just wish that we have a united Eid this time.
