Eight-hour power outage a fatal blow to industries

KARACHI – SITE Association of Industry Chairman Abdul Wahab Lakhani has sharply reacted over eight hours loadshedding in two spells daily in industrial areas by KESC due to alleged drastic cut in gas supply by the Sui Southern Gas Company to power utility.

Industrial load shedding causes loss of 400,000 jobs: WB report

ISLAMABAD: Industrial load shedding in Pakistan has resulted in a loss of 400,000 jobs and sector deficit in Pakistan is estimated at about $2 billion a year, compared with $32 billion of investment needs in 2010-20, stated a World Bank (WB) report.

The WB report “More and Better Jobs in South Asia” also contains a special portion on power sector reforms “Options for Reforming the Power Sector in South Asia”, stating that South Asia is characterised by low levels of access, low consumption per capita, and wide demand-supply gaps. I am ashamed of writing a tough title for this post, but it is actually true. Load shedding is actually destroying the economy of the country, and let me remind you that economy is the backbone of a nation. Our Greatest Quaid M.A. Jinnah knew the importance of an economy thats why the first step he took right after partition, was to establish our own central bank. Thus, State Bank of Pakistan came into existence and started its operations in 1948.

Lets analyze whats happening right after 61 years of independence:

A couple of days ago, I happened to visit Urdu Bazar Lahore, that’s the biggest publishing and printing market of Lahore. My heart was literally crying after seeing the condition of small businessmen there. There are lots of small printing shops where people work on small machines. I went to a couple of shops and inquired about their conditions, he said that the machine takes at least 10-20 minutes to warm up before starting printing and the electricity breakdown happens 12-14 hours a day. Now we can imagine what would be the circumstances for him. I again wondered if he could use a UPS or Generator, he again replied that Generator is out of their affording power and UPS is not powerful enough to bear the load of such machines.
Trust me, industries are dying due to such conditions. I wish if Zardari saab was sensible enough and he would have taken steps on emergency basis to cop with this problem, but Zardari saab is concentrating on begging from foreign countries. This is such a mess; instead of empowering your own economy, you are focusing on borrowings and loans.
