The man behind the Sydney siege was reportedly a 49-year-old Iranian migrant with criminal record and claims like practicing black magic. Monis was a self-proclaimed Muslim Sheikh notorious for his controversial views. It is unclear if he had any following.

Monis held hostage up to 20 innocent Australians for some 16 hours. Reports suggest that some 5 hostages escaped successfully, following which two of the hostages met with Monis’ wrath as he shot them dead.

The Australian forces stormed inside the cafe and fried Monis, a showdown that took place after some 16 hours of the siege.

Haron Monis has a long criminal history including sexual assault and was being tried for murder of his wife.
