Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Hussain Chaudhry has announced his ministry’s ambitious programme whereby the government intends to send first Pakistani in space by 2022. The announcement comes after the news of India’s space mission making strides with moon landing.

Chaudhry Fawad Hussain made the announcement on Twitter and said that the process of selection will begin from February 2020 in which 50 people will be selected and from there on, they will be shortlisted further to 25 people and in the year 2022, Pakistan will send its first person in space.

This is indeed very promising and futuristic and shows how ambitious Pakistani government is in bringing the country forward. However, this isn’t the first time the government is making jingoistic and rhetorical claims and this might just be another promise unfulfilled.

Even if this actually takes place, one must question the priorities. If the intention behind this is the cat fight with India and like arms race — we wanna do it because India did it — then I don’t see any point in this but if the purpose actually is scientific advances then I’m all for it.

Just one thing though: May I suggest who that first person should be? I’m thinking Tehreek-e-Labbaik’s Khadim Rizvi.
